Retinopathy of Prematurity Services
Retinopathy of prematurity is a dreaded blinding disease of premature babies. If detected by screening at an appropriate time after the birth , this disease can be treated and blindness prevented.
Babies born before 34 weeks of gestation age and /or weighing less than 1750 gm at birth need to be screened within 4 weeks from the time of birth. Some older and bigger babies may also need screening if they have spent some time in the NICU. The disease passes through various stages. Intervention may be needed in the form of:
- LASER photocoagulation
- Anti- VEGF injections like Avastin or Accentrix
- Retinal surgery
